About

Bob Kerrey (full name James Robert Kerrey) is an American politician and businessman, known for serving as governor of Nebraska (1983–1987) and as a United States senator from Nebraska (1989–2001). Before his public career, he served as a Navy SEAL officer in Vietnam and was awarded the Medal of Honor for combat action in 1969, when he was severely wounded.

As a public figure, Kerrey sought the Democratic presidential nomination in 1992 and again ran for the Senate in 2012, unsuccessfully. After leaving the Senate he served as president of The New School (2001–2010) and held positions in cultural organizations and consulting firms, in addition to participating on boards and groups focused on campaign finance reform.

His military record is marked both by recognition for bravery and by controversy: investigative reports revived criticism of an attack on a Vietnamese village that resulted in civilian deaths, an episode that prompted debate over responsibility and the memory of the conflict.

Kerrey remains a prominent figure in American political and institutional life, with a legacy that combines military service, state government, federal office, and work in education and public affairs.
