About

Bobby Riggs was one of the leading American tennis players of the 1930s and 1940s, ranking as the amateur world No. 1 in 1939 and as a professional No. 1 in 1946–1947. At 21 he rose to prominence by winning Wimbledon and the U.S. Championships in 1939 and reaching the final at Roland‑Garros; at the same Wimbledon he also won the men’s and mixed doubles titles. Over his career he collected important titles at national and regional tournaments and helped the United States win the Davis Cup in 1938.

After leaving top‑level competition, Riggs became a well‑known figure off the court as a gambler and organizer of exhibition matches. In the 1970s he promoted challenges that mixed spectacle and controversy, the most famous being the so‑called “Battle of the Sexes” against Billie Jean King in 1973, an event of huge media impact that shaped debates about gender and professionalism in tennis.

Born and raised in Los Angeles, Riggs was noted for his speed, ball control and tactical skill; his career combined sporting success with a provocative public persona, leaving an ambiguous legacy that links competitive achievements with cultural impact on the sport of tennis.
