About

Bram Stoker was an Irish novelist, poet and short-story writer whose best-known work, Dracula (1897), established the literary myth of the vampire in Western culture. Educated in Dublin, he began writing early and worked as a critic and contributor for newspapers, as well as serving in administrative and biographical roles with the theatrical company of actor Henry Irving, with whom he maintained a close professional relationship for nearly three decades.

His interest in folklore, vampire mythologies and scientific and occult themes runs through novels that move between the Gothic and the early stages of science fiction, such as The Lady of the Shroud. He also published short stories, theatrical essays and biographies, notable for the research and documentation that informed his narratives.

A moderate political activist, Stoker supported Irish reform by peaceful means and held monarchist positions, reflecting the sociopolitical context of the late nineteenth century. His work left a lasting legacy in fantastic literature and popular culture, with numerous translations, adaptations and critical studies of his contribution to the imagination of the supernatural.
