About
Cal Collins was an American jazz guitarist whose career moved from bluegrass to swing and mainstream jazz. He began professionally on mandolin in bluegrass bands in the 1950s, but after serving in the Army and hearing the great swing guitarists he turned to jazz guitar, maintaining an active presence on the Cincinnati scene for two decades.
At 43 he was recruited by Benny Goodman, joining the orchestra for three years, and afterwards recorded several albums for the Concord Jazz label. He worked both as a leader and as an accompanist on recordings and tours with names such as Scott Hamilton, Warren Vaché, Rosemary Clooney, John Bunch and Woody Herman, establishing himself as a versatile, polished interpreter of the standards repertoire.
In the early 1980s he slowed his pace and returned to Cincinnati, but continued to take part in projects and festivals, including the Masters of the Steel String tour in 1993. His final album was released in 1998. Collins left a legacy as a sensitive interpreter of the jazz repertoire and as a link between traditional swing and the revivalist jazz of the period.
