About

Capucine, stage name of Germaine Hélène Irène Lefebvre, was a French model and actress whose career spanned the 1950s to the 1980s. She began in fashion working for the maisons Givenchy and Dior, establishing herself as an icon of elegance that she later carried into international cinema. She became known for comic roles in commercially successful films, notably The Pink Panther (1963) and What's New Pussycat? (1965).

Under contract to American studios, she starred in productions alongside names such as William Holden and John Wayne, and appeared in films by directors including Blake Edwards and Federico Fellini. From the late 1960s her filmography also included more experimental European films and roles that contributed to her complex and ambiguous image in popular culture.

Over the course of her film career she made about 36 films and numerous television appearances, alternating between Hollywood and European productions. Recognized for her visual presence and for characters that explored variations of femininity, she left a legacy as a figure who embodied the shift from fashion glamour to the modernity of postwar European cinema.
