About

An American child actor and public figure, Carl Switzer became known for playing Alfalfa in the Our Gang short films (known in Brazil as Os Pequenos Travessos) from the mid-1930s into the early 1940s. His image as a mischievous boy and singer brought him wide exposure during the short-subject era and led to roles in adult films throughout the 1940s.

During his career he appeared in a variety of commercial productions, moving from child parts to supporting roles in studio films. Alongside his film work, he worked as a professional dog breeder and hunting guide—occupations that became part of his life after his time as a child star.

His life ended violently in 1959, when he was shot dead following a dispute related to hunting services and reimbursement of expenses; the official investigation ruled the accused’s actions justified as self-defense. Switzer’s career reflects both the early brightness of child stardom in Hollywood and the difficulties of reinventing oneself in adulthood, and he is remembered in popular culture for his iconic child character.
