Carroll Edward "Eddie" Cole was an American criminal whose career became notorious for a series of strangulation murders and for his execution in Nevada in 1985. From the 1950s through the 1980s, Cole amassed arrests for various offenses, stints in psychiatric hospitals, and convictions for violent behavior—patterns that culminated in multiple murder charges across several states.
As an adult, Cole was convicted for killings in Texas and Nevada and was linked to a number of other victims over more than three decades. In trials around 1980 he confessed to several murders and received life sentences and, later, the death penalty in Nevada.
Accounts of his life report a background of family abuse in childhood and episodes of violent behavior from an early age, including a childhood death he later admitted to. His criminal activity involved a modus operandi centered on strangling women, often connected with alcoholism and misogynistic attitudes.
Cole’s case drew wide public attention because he moved between jurisdictions and raised questions about psychiatric evaluations and earlier judicial decisions.
