About

Chaim Herzog was a notable military officer, jurist, diplomat and politician, best known for serving as President of Israel from 1983 to 1993. Born in Ireland and trained in law in London, he combined a military career — serving in the Haganah, in the British Army during World War II and later in the Israel Defense Forces, where he rose to the rank of major-general — with business and legal practice, cofounding one of the country’s largest law firms.

As a diplomat he represented Israel at the United Nations (1975–1978), where he became known for denouncing the resolution that equated Zionism with racism. His public career also included a parliamentary term and, later, the presidency, a largely ceremonial office he held for two consecutive terms.

An author and influential public figure, Herzog left a mark both internationally — defending the legitimacy of the State of Israel in multilateral forums — and domestically, as part of a family with a prominent role in Israeli political and religious life. He was buried in Jerusalem.
