About

Charles-Philippe Robin was a French physician, biologist, and histologist whose career focused on introducing and advancing the use of the microscope in medicine. A prolific author — with more than 300 publications — he was a pioneer in describing Odium albicans (now Candida albicans) and made decisive contributions to both normal and pathological histology, becoming one of the principal promoters of the discipline in France.

Trained in medicine and in natural sciences, he co‑founded the Society of Biology in 1848, where he helped define its goals and coined concepts that broadened the study of biological environments. He held the first chair of histology at the Faculty of Medicine of Paris, created for him in 1862, and was a member of the academies of medicine and sciences, honors that reflect his scientific influence.

Beyond his academic work and research, he organized medical services during the 1870–71 war and served publicly as senator for Ain (1876–1885), aligned with republicanism. He left a lasting legacy in teaching, microscopic techniques, and reference works, including contributions to a medical dictionary and numerous treatises on anatomy and histology.
