About

Charles Robert Richet was a French physician and physiologist whose work shaped modern immunology. A professor at the University of Paris–Sorbonne for decades, he published an extensive body of scientific and clinical work, investigating topics from nervous system physiology and thermoregulation to therapeutic methods such as serotherapy and anesthetics (including chloralose). His best-known achievement was the description of anaphylaxis — a potentially fatal hypersensitivity reaction — discovered through experiments conducted in the early twentieth century, a contribution that earned him the 1913 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.

In addition to experimental work, Richet served as a scientific editor and prolific author, publishing hundreds of articles as well as novels, plays, and poems. He also took part in scientific and technological initiatives of his time, including studies on aviation. His career combined rigorous laboratory investigation with a broad interest in cultural and social issues.

Richet also devoted himself to the study of psychic phenomena, promoting controlled protocols and statistical analyses that influenced experimental methodology in the human sciences. A controversial figure for his involvement with metapsychics, he left a lasting legacy in physiology and immunology, influencing subsequent generations of researchers.
