About

Chester Burton “Chet” Atkins was an American guitarist, arranger and producer whose work was decisive in shaping the so‑called “Nashville sound,” a style of country music with appeal to adult pop audiences. Known as “Mister Guitar” and “the Country Gentleman,” he was noted for his refined fingerpicking—influenced by Merle Travis, Django Reinhardt, Les Paul and others—and for his versatility on mandolin, viola, banjo and ukulele.

During decades at RCA Victor, Atkins produced and assembled records for artists such as Dolly Parton, Elvis Presley, Hank Snow, Porter Wagoner and the Everly Brothers, among many others. His production work and instrumental technique helped modernize the country industry and broaden its commercial audience.

Recognized by critics and the industry, he won multiple Grammys (including a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award) and was inducted into several halls of fame, including the Country Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. His legacy endures in his influence on generations of guitarists and in the lasting popularity of the sound he helped create.
