Chick Corea (Armando Anthony Corea) was an American pianist, keyboardist, composer and bandleader, recognized as one of the central figures of jazz from the 1960s through the 1990s. He rose to prominence as a member of Miles Davis’s band in the late 1960s, contributing to the emergence of electric fusion on landmark albums such as In a Silent Way and Bitches Brew. In the 1970s he achieved great acclaim with the group Return to Forever, whose lineup changed over time to include musicians like Al Di Meola and Stanley Clarke, and which established enduring compositions such as "Spain" and "500 Miles High".
Throughout his career he alternated between electronic exploration and a return to the acoustic piano, leading groups such as The Elektric Band and the Akoustic Trio, as well as duos and trios with notable musicians (Gary Burton, Herbie Hancock, Miroslav Vitous, Roy Haynes). His work spans solo albums, chamber music projects and ventures into classical repertoire, and includes several recordings now regarded as classics of modern jazz, such as Now He Sings, Now He Sobs.
Widely regarded as one of the most influential jazz pianists, his legacy includes timbral innovations, a repertoire widely adopted by performers and influence on generations of instrumentalists. He died in 2021, leaving a large discography and a lasting impact on the language of jazz.
