About
Christian Didier was a French public figure known for assassinating René Bousquet in 1993; Bousquet had been a senior police official during the Vichy regime. Before the killing, Didier attracted public attention through spectacular attempts to draw media coverage to his writings and actions, alternating a pursuit of notoriety with a rhetoric of “punishment” directed at former collaborators with the Nazis.
His life included varied work (metalworking, driving, archiving) and periods abroad, as well as frequent psychiatric hospitalizations and attempts to publish books; one of his works was self-published. In the decades before the murder he carried out incidents of intrusion into TV programs, ceremonies, and official palaces, which led to arrests and medical evaluations.
Didier also tried to confront other individuals accused of crimes during the occupation, notably Klaus Barbie; that episode resulted in imprisonment for illegal possession of a weapon and in psychiatric treatment. The Bousquet case and Didier’s death in 2015 left a controversial legacy at the intersection of memory justice, journalistic scrutiny, and questions about mental health.
