About

Clare Boothe Luce was a multifaceted public figure: a writer, journalist, playwright, congresswoman and American diplomat. She rose to prominence with the 1936 play The Women, a critical and popular success, and authored works spanning drama, film, fiction, war reporting and political essays. As an editor and columnist, she maintained an influential presence in the cultural and journalistic life of her time.

Elected to the House of Representatives from Connecticut (1943–1947), Luce also made her mark in diplomacy as U.S. Ambassador to Italy (1953–1956). Over the course of her public life she became a prominent voice of American conservatism and a staunch anti‑Communist, although earlier she had flirted with liberal positions close to the Roosevelt administration.

A convert to Catholicism in 1946, she was known for charismatic oratory and forceful stances on foreign policy, while also voicing criticisms of British colonialism. Married to publisher Henry Luce, her career left a legacy at the intersection of culture, media and twentieth‑century American politics.
