About

French athlete Colette Besson won international attention by taking the 400 m at the 1968 Olympic Games in 52.03 s, at the time a European record and close to the world record. Her victory in Mexico was one of the era’s biggest surprises and made her a benchmark for French women’s middle-distance running.

During her career Besson collected national titles and results at continental and Mediterranean competitions, including European podiums in individual and relay events, and victories at the French championships in the 400 m, 800 m and cross-country. From 1968 to the mid-1970s she was a regular on the national team (about 35 selections) and posted marks that ranked among the best of the time.

After ending her international career in 1977 she concentrated on coaching and sports administration: she worked as a coach and technical manager in clubs and regional structures outside the capital, taught physical education and held administrative posts linked to sport and to the fight against doping. Decorated by her country, she remained an emblem of French athletics and a point of reference for subsequent generations.
