About
David Grossman is one of the most prominent contemporary Israeli writers, known for novels, essays, and children’s books translated into more than 30 languages. His literary work has received international recognition, including the Man Booker International Prize (2017, for A Horse Walks into a Bar) and the Israel Prize for Literature (2018), as well as national awards such as the Sapir and Bernstein prizes.
A graduate in philosophy and theater, Grossman worked for many years as a journalist and broadcaster, an experience that shaped his public engagement. He became a prominent figure in national debate by addressing the Israeli–Palestinian conflict in works such as To the End of the Land and through public interventions, adopting a left‑wing pacifist stance that earned him both admiration and criticism.
Personal grief has informed his writing: the death of his son Uri, a soldier in the Israel Defense Forces in 2006, produced writings on mourning and loss, notably Falling Out of Time. Beyond fiction, Grossman has been visibly active in civic life — participating in demonstrations against settlements and advocating negotiations as the path to peace — establishing him as an engaged writer and an influential voice in Israeli culture.
