About

David Knopfler is a Scottish musician and one of the founders of the rock band Dire Straits, together with his brother Mark Knopfler, John Illsley and Pick Withers. He played rhythm guitar on the group's first two albums, helping shape the sound that made them known in the late 1970s, before leaving the band during the recording of their third album, Making Movies (1980).

From 1983 he began a solo career, releasing a series of albums that explore acoustic arrangements and varied formats, including Release (1983), Behind the Lines (1985) and Ship of Dreams (2004). He worked with recurring collaborators such as Harry Bogdanovs and featured guest appearances by musicians including Mark Knopfler, Chris Rea and Eddi Reader. His repertoire also includes film soundtracks and co‑writing projects with contemporary artists.

In addition to his musical work, he published a book of poetry, Blood Stones and Rhythmic Beasts, in 2005. He has maintained an active recording and touring career over the decades, with recent releases including Last Train Leaving (2020) and subsequent albums up to Crow Gifts (2024), demonstrating ongoing creative output and a presence on the international circuit.
