About

David Howell Petraeus is a retired United States Army officer and a public figure known for his military career and a brief tenure as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Over 37 years of service, he commanded major multinational missions, including leading combat forces in Iraq as commander of the Multi-National Force – Iraq and later serving as commander of U.S. Central Command and of international forces in Afghanistan (ISAF/USFOR‑A). Those positions made him a reference on counterinsurgency operations and contemporary military strategy.

Academically distinguished, Petraeus received the General George C. Marshall Award as the top graduate of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College and served as a professor of international relations at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point; he also completed a fellowship at Georgetown. After retiring from the military, he was appointed Director of the CIA in 2011, a post he left in 2012 for personal reasons, an episode that led to an investigation and legal accountability for mishandling classified material.

In the academic and public spheres, Petraeus has remained active: more recently he has taught at institutions of higher education and continued to write and speak on foreign policy and international security. His career combines operational leadership in conflict, professional recognition, and a contested legacy shaped by the conclusion of his civilian career.
