Dee Molenaar

About

Dee Molenaar was an American mountaineer, writer, and artist, best known for The Challenge of Rainier (1971), a key work on the history of climbs on Mount Rainier. Trained in geology at the University of Washington, he served as a park ranger and guide in Mount Rainier National Park, where he made more than fifty ascents via over a dozen routes, including three first ascents, establishing his authority on the mountain and its history.

During World War II he served as a photographer in the U.S. Coast Guard and later worked for the United States Geological Survey in various regions of the country until his retirement in 1983. He took part in notable expeditions such as the second ascent of Mount Saint Elias (1946), the attempt on K2 with the Third American Karakoram Expedition (1953), and the first ascent of Mount Kennedy (1965).

In addition to his climbing, Molenaar produced watercolor and oil paintings, noted for mountainous and desert landscapes in an impressionist style; in a famous episode he painted from camp at 7,600 m during the K2 expedition. His contribution to mountaineering was recognized with his inclusion in the American Alpine Club’s Hall of Mountaineering Excellence (2012).
