About

Deng Xiaoping was the principal leader of the People’s Republic of China between 1978 and 1992, recognized as the architect of the Reform and Opening policies that transformed China’s economy. A communist activist since the 1920s, he took part in the Long March, in resistance to the Japanese occupation, and in the communist victory of 1949, holding prominent positions in the Party and government in the following decades.

Persecuted during the Cultural Revolution, he was purged and later returned to power, where he pursued a pragmatic shift toward a socialist market economy. His policies of economic decentralization, attraction of foreign investment and establishment of special economic zones drove rapid growth and industrial modernization.

Deng’s legacy is also marked by controversy: he ordered the suppression of the 1989 protests, a measure that damaged his international reputation, although he reaffirmed his commitment to reform during the so-called “southern tour” in 1992. His legacy is ambiguous — he opened China to the world while consolidating an authoritarian political model that prioritized economic development.
