About

American actress Diana Barrymore initially rose to attention through her family name: the daughter of famed actor John Barrymore and poet Blanche Oelrichs, her career was boosted by that illustrious surname. She made her Broadway debut at 19 and soon moved into film, signing with Universal in 1942, which promoted her as that year’s major discovery.

Her artistic promise was shadowed by serious personal problems. Alcohol and drug dependence and episodes of depression led to hospitalizations, suicide attempts and an early professional decline, ending in a few years a once-promising career in film and theatre.

In the 1950s she sought to re-enter public life: she published the autobiography Too Much, Too Soon in 1957 and gave television interviews to promote the book. A film adaptation of the memoir was released in 1958, though it failed to find critical or commercial success.

Her private life included three turbulent marriages and financial losses; she died in 1960, in circumstances whose cause was inconclusive at autopsy. She is remembered as a tragic figure of a theatrical dynasty and as an example of the pressures and contradictions of twentieth-century celebrity.
