About
Richard Eugene Hickock was an American criminal known for his role in the murder of four members of the Clutter family in Holcomb, Kansas, on November 15, 1959 — a crime that gained wide notoriety through Truman Capote’s nonfiction book In Cold Blood. A former convict, Hickock’s life included manual jobs and repeated offenses, including thefts and writing bad checks; he was imprisoned in 1958 and released on parole in 1959.
While in prison he kept in touch with other inmates, among them Perry Smith and Floyd Wells; information provided by Wells about an alleged safe in the Clutter home prompted the plan that culminated in the robbery and killings. On the day of the crime, Hickock and Smith did not find the purported safe and murdered the four residents.
Tried alongside Smith, Hickock was convicted of multiple counts of homicide in March 1960 and executed by hanging on April 14, 1965. Different court records and confessions dispute who fired the fatal shots. His public legacy remains tied to the Clutter case and to debates over violence, criminal investigation, and the death penalty in the United States.
