About

Dietrich Bonhoeffer was a German theologian, Lutheran pastor and intellectual whose work and actions made him a central figure in Christian resistance to Nazism. A rigorous academic trained in Berlin, he produced dissertations and writings that engaged with Barth, Hegel and the German philosophical tradition, interrogating the relationship between being, action and the Christian community. His thought emphasized the Church’s responsibility in the face of injustice and the need for a faith embodied in social commitment.

In the context of the Nazi rise to power, Bonhoeffer emerged as a leader of the Confessing Church, taking a stand against the Church’s submission to the regime’s ideology and defending solidarity with victims, including non-Christians. He was also active in international ecumenism and pursued pastoral and academic work abroad, including in the United States, Spain and India.

As he radicalized his opposition to Nazism, he became involved with resistance circles and in the conspiracy to remove Hitler, which led to his arrest in 1943. His prison letters and ethical essays such as Ethics and his essay on discipleship remain reference points in twentieth-century theology. Executed in 1945, he left a legacy of reflection on moral responsibility, civil courage and the relationship between faith and political action.
