About

Don Elston was an American right‑handed pitcher who served mainly as a reliever in Major League Baseball, appearing in 450 games, nearly all for the Chicago Cubs between 1953 and 1964. A product of the Cubs’ farm system from 1948, he built a long professional career before establishing himself in Chicago from 1957 onward, after a brief stint with the Dodgers.

Known for a strong arm, Elston made his mark in the bullpen at a time when the reliever’s role was gaining importance. He led the National League in games pitched in 1958 and was co‑leader in 1959, the year he set career highs with 10 wins, 14 saves and was selected to the All‑Star Game, where he preserved the National League’s victory. From 1957 to 1962 he ranked among the league leaders in both saves and appearances.

Over his MLB career he recorded 49 wins, 54 losses, a 3.69 ERA and 64 saves, pitching more than 755 innings. His performance and reliability in relief earned him a place in the Cubs’ history of the 1950s and 1960s. He died in 1995 at age 65.
