Don Ho

About

Don Ho was a Hawaiian singer and entertainer who achieved international fame in the 1960s and 1970s by popularizing a light-sounding pop repertoire that incorporated elements of Hawaiian culture. He became known for the hit "Tiny Bubbles" (1966), which propelled his eponymous album up the charts and cemented his image as an ambassador of the islands' tourist entertainment.

A native of Oʻahu, Ho turned his family’s bar, Honey's, into a landmark for visitors and military personnel, then expanded his career to venues in Waikīkī, Las Vegas, Lake Tahoe and New York. Appearances on television and a variety series on ABC (1976–1977) further increased his national profile.

Throughout his career he faced criticism from local movements that defended traditional Hawaiian music and regarded his style as overly commercial; nevertheless, he retained broad appeal among tourists and celebrities. He left a tradition of family entertainment—several of his daughters performed with him—and influenced later Hawaiian artists.
