About

Duarte Nuno de Bragança was the leading representative of the Miguelist branch of the House of Bragança throughout the 20th century. Born in Austria, he became claimant to the title Duke of Braganza in 1920 after his brothers renounced their claims, and was recognized by various monarchist organizations as head of the Portuguese Royal House following the death of D. Manuel II. His claim placed him at the center of dynastic tensions that persisted among the Portuguese monarchist émigré community.

For decades he lived in exile and maintained contacts with monarchist and integralist circles; in 1929 he made a clandestine visit to Portugal. He married Princess Maria Francisca of Orléans and Bragança in 1942, a union that brought the Braganza and Orléans lines closer together, and had three children, including Duarte Pio, the current claimant to the dukedom.

After the revocation of the Law of Banishment in 1950, Duarte Nuno moved his residence to Portugal in 1953, initially settling in the Monastery of São Marcos in Coimbra. In the following decades he faced disputes over the headship of the Royal House, notably with D. Maria Pia of Saxe‑Coburg and Gotha. After 25 April 1974 some of his properties and residences were affected by the political upheavals.

He died in Lisbon in 1976 of cardiovascular problems and was buried in the Pantheon of the Dukes of Braganza in Vila Viçosa. His historical role is primarily to have reaffirmed the continuity of a dynastic line and to have prepared the succession that led Duarte Pio to assume representation of the House of Bragança.
