About

Louis Joseph Xavier of France, Duke of Burgundy, was an 18th-century prince of the House of Bourbon, known for his place in the line of succession and the attention he received at the court of Versailles. Born into the royal family, he was granted the title Duke of Burgundy by the king and was raised under the supervision of high-ranking noblewomen, growing up with the dynastic expectations placed on a potential heir.

Noted for his beauty and liveliness, he was the elder brother of future monarchs who would shape French history: Louis XVI, Louis XVIII and Charles X. His education and treatment reflected the political and symbolic importance assigned to royal children at the time, as well as the ritualized environment of the court of Louis XV.

Louis Joseph’s childhood was marked by health problems following a childhood accident and an orthopedic operation with serious complications that left him immobilized and led to a fatal illness. His death at the age of nine had an emotional impact on the family and altered the line of succession, with personal consequences for his younger brothers and for the dynasty.
