About

Eugène of Savoy, Duke of Ancona and later claimant to the dukedom of Genoa, was a member of the Italian royal family whose life combined military service, dynastic ties and a discreet private life. The son of Thomas of Savoy-Genoa and Isabella of Bavaria, he belonged to a lineage connected to several European royal houses, a circumstance reflected in the numerous honors he received while still young.

Enlisted in the Navy in 1927, he took part in the Ethiopian campaign as a member of the San Marco Battalion and served as government commissioner of Seraè in Italian East Africa. Despite his involvement in notable events of Italy’s interwar history, he remained removed from court society, a condition partly attributed to a palatal deformity that affected his speech.

He married in 1938 to Lucia of Bourbon-Two Sicilies, with whom he had a daughter, Maria Isabel. After the proclamation of the republic in Italy in 1946 he moved to Brazil, where he devoted himself to agricultural activity and lived until 1996. With his death the male line of the Savoy-Genoa ducal branch became extinct; in 2006 his remains were transferred to the royal crypt of the Basilica of Superga in Turin.
