About

Duke of Parma Elias (Elie Robert Charles Marie de Bourbon) was head of the House of Bourbon-Parma and claimant to the duchy of Parma and Piacenza from 1950 to 1959. A son of the deposed Duke Robert I, he served for decades as regent and representative of the family due to the incapacity of two elder brothers, overseeing the guardianship of other clan members and maintaining the dynastic leadership role in a context of exile and loss of sovereignty.

His life reflected the complex relations among European dynasties in the early twentieth century: married to Archduchess Maria Anna of Austria-Teschen, he took part in family negotiations over inheritances and properties, including the Château de Chambord. Legal disputes and confiscations imposed after the First World War marked his patrimony, which was partly compensated financially.

Naturalized Spanish with a personal title, Elias combined noble, military and administrative functions within the European aristocratic sphere. He formally succeeded as claimant only in 1950, shortly before his death in 1959, leaving as his legacy the continuation of the Bourbon-Parma line and a record characterized by estate management and family litigation in a post-imperial context.
