About

Bernhard III, the last reigning Duke of Saxe‑Meiningen, was notable as a military officer and a patron of letters within the context of the German monarchy in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The son of Georg II and Charlotte Fredericka of Prussia, he pursued a career in the Prussian army, rising to Generaloberst and later Generalfeldmarschall before retiring in 1912. He succeeded to the duchy in 1914, during a period dominated by the First World War and political tensions that ultimately led to the fall of the German royal houses.

During the war he expressed frustration at not receiving the command he sought, a stance that led him to withdraw from the leadership of the local government. After Germany’s defeat and the Revolution of 1918, he was forced to abdicate on 10 November 1918, losing his titles and properties and spending the remainder of his life as a private citizen in Meiningen, where he died in 1928.

Beyond his military career, Bernhard cultivated the arts and the humanities: he composed music, wrote poetry, translated works into modern Greek and conducted historical studies of Greece and Asia Minor, work that earned him an honorary doctorate. His legacy blends military service with a cultivated, scholarly profile representative of a strand of the pre‑republican German aristocracy.
