About
Pierre de Polignac, known in Portugal and Brazil as Pedro, Duke of Valentinois, was a French nobleman connected to the European high aristocracy and is mainly remembered for his integration into the Monegasque dynasty. The son of Count Maxence de Polignac and Susana de la Torre y Mier, he came from a family with historical ties to the French court, descending from the noted Duchess of Polignac, a friend of Marie Antoinette.
In 1920 he married Charlotte of Monaco, then adopted by Louis II, thereafter using the title Prince of Monaco and receiving the dukedom of Valentinois by marriage. The couple had two children: Antoinette, Baroness of Massy, and Rainier III, who would go on to rule Monaco and make the family widely known internationally.
The marriage ended in judicial separation in 1930 and divorce in 1933, but Pierre retained the style of His Serene Highness. He died in 1964 and was buried in the Chapel of Peace in Monte Carlo. His public legacy rests chiefly in the dynastic continuity of the Grimaldi family through his son Rainier III.
