About

Edwin Donald “Duke” Snider was a prominent American professional baseball player, best known for his long tenure as a center fielder with the Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodgers (1947–1962). He was an eight-time National League All-Star and finished second in the MVP voting in 1955; between 1949 and 1959 he helped the team reach six World Series, winning championships in 1955 and 1959. Snider’s offensive consistency made him a key member of the powerful postwar Dodgers, including five consecutive seasons with more than 40 home runs and seasons in which he led the league in hits, runs, and RBIs.

His career also included late stints with the New York Mets (1963) and the San Francisco Giants (1964), when he was playing part-time due to injuries and a gradual decline in performance. A fan favorite, Snider was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1980 in recognition of his lasting offensive impact and his central role in one of the league’s most remembered dynasties. His legacy remains tied to the Dodgers’ golden era and to comparisons with other great center fielders of his generation.
