About

Edgar Faure was a jurist, essayist and prominent French politician whose career spanned the Fourth and Fifth Republics. A prodigious lawyer in Paris, he entered politics with the Radical Party and became a central figure in parliamentary life: he served as deputy, senator, minister in several governments and held the office of Prime Minister on two short occasions (1952 and 1955–56). He presided over the National Assembly from 1973 to 1978 and had a very long record in regional offices, notably in Franche‑Comté and the departments of Jura and Doubs.

During World War II he joined the Resistance and, after the conflict, acted as a prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials. In the postwar years he also distinguished himself in cultural and educational fields: he coordinated the “Learning to Be” report for UNESCO (1972) and, in 1978, was elected to the Académie Française.

Known for his versatility and political adaptability — at times allying with the Gaullists — Faure left a legacy as a public administrator and educational reformer. His career combined ministerial experience in finance, education and social affairs with an active local and regional presence, influencing parliamentary institutions and European initiatives for regional cooperation.
