Edgar Herbert Smith Jr. was an American convicted of homicide for the 1957 murder of teenager Victoria Ann Zielinski in Ramsey, New Jersey. The crime, characterized by extreme violence and compelling forensic evidence, led to his death sentence. While awaiting execution, Smith began extensive correspondence with conservative commentator William F. Buckley Jr., who came to advocate for his innocence and funded a high-profile legal team to reopen the case.

In 1971, after prolonged legal work and public attention, a federal judge overturned his conviction and ordered a new trial; Smith accepted a plea agreement that resulted in his release for time served. Years later, in San Diego, he was accused of kidnapping and attempting to kill another woman; the victim survived and, at that trial, Smith confessed to the 1957 homicide. He was sentenced to life imprisonment and remained incarcerated until his death in 2017.

Smith’s case became notorious for combining a brutal crime, debates over the reliability of confessions and legal appeals, and the involvement of public figures in revisiting convictions, prompting discussions about criminal justice and the press.
