About

Edward Jean Steichen was a photographer, painter and curator of Luxembourgish origin who became an American citizen, and a central figure in establishing photography as an art form in the 20th century. Active from the turn of the century, he was known for technical experimentation — including pioneering use of the Autochrome process for color photography — and for an iconographic output that spanned portraiture, fashion and photojournalism.

A partner of Alfred Stieglitz, Steichen helped found the magazine Camera Work and the 291 gallery, venues that promoted modern European artists in the United States and advanced the acceptance of photography within the visual arts. His career also included significant work in fashion photography; sessions such as those of 1911 featuring Paul Poiret designs are cited as milestones in the image of modern fashion.

During both world wars he led military photographic units, whose work influenced documentary and propaganda practices. Later, his curatorial projects — notably the exhibition The Family of Man — broadened his legacy as an international cultural mediator. Steichen’s works and archives are held in museum collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the George Eastman Museum.
