About

Elke Sommer (born Elke Schletz) is a German actress whose international career flourished in the 1960s and 1970s. She became a frequent presence in European and Hollywood productions, starring in films such as A Shot in the Dark (1964) and The Prize (1963)—for which she won the Golden Globe for Most Promising Newcomer—and in numerous comedies and thrillers that established her as a star and a period pin‑up.

In addition to film, Sommer worked regularly on television and variety shows, recorded albums as a performer, and made guest appearances on U.S. series. In the early 1970s she shifted much of her activity back to Europe, appearing in Italian and British productions, including the Carry On franchise, where she ranked among the highest‑paid actresses.

From the 1980s onward she also devoted herself to the visual arts, exhibiting paintings influenced by Marc Chagall and inspired by the travels and languages she mastered during her career; she speaks seven languages. Her career also includes notable dubbing work (she provided a German voice in The Emperor’s New Groove) and public recognition such as a star on the Palm Springs Walk of Stars.
