About

Elsa Morante was an Italian writer—novelist, poet, translator and author of children’s books—whose work shaped postwar Italian literature. Largely self-taught, she began publishing short stories in the 1930s and released her first book, Il Gioco Segreto, in 1941. Her output includes award‑winning novels, poetry and translations, reflecting interests in music, psychoanalysis and the great classics.

Her international recognition was cemented by L'isola di Arturo (1957), which won the Strega Prize, and by La storia (1974), a novel set in Rome during World War II that became a national bestseller and appears on lists of reference works. Menzogna e sortilegio, her debut novel, received the Viareggio Prize.

Her experience during the Nazi occupation and a temporary exile in southern Italy informed central themes of her writing: childhood, memory, love as an ambiguous force, and the use of fantasy as an escape from reality. Her prose and characters often explore autobiographical and psychological dimensions, leaving a lasting legacy in twentieth‑century Italian literature.
