About

Elsie Inglis (1864–1917) was a Scottish surgeon born in India, recognized for pioneering work in maternal health and for her efforts on behalf of women’s rights. She trained in medicine in Edinburgh and Glasgow and worked at important institutions of the time, such as the New Hospital for Women in London and the Rotunda Hospital in Dublin. On returning to Edinburgh she established a clinic with Jessie Macgregor and founded a maternity facility for poor women, an initiative that later became the Elsie Inglis Memorial Hospital.

Unsatisfied with the standards of care available to women, Inglis became a suffrage activist and played a central role in founding the Scottish Federation of Women’s Suffrage. Her career combined clinical practice with social organization, aiming to improve access to and the quality of obstetric care provided by women.

Elsie Inglis’s legacy is tied both to the health institutions she helped found and to the movement for women’s political rights in Scotland, making her a leading figure in the history of women’s medicine and suffrage.
