About

David Émile Durkheim was a French sociologist, anthropologist, political scientist and philosopher whose work established sociology as an academic discipline. Author of foundational texts such as The Division of Labour in Society (1893), The Rules of Sociological Method (1895), Suicide (1897) and The Elementary Forms of Religious Life (1912), Durkheim sought to understand how societies maintain cohesion in the face of modernity and the weakening of traditional bonds.

A pioneering professor, he created the first European department of sociology and founded the journal L'Année Sociologique, helping to secure sociology’s status as a legitimate science. He refined positivism with an epistemological realism and advocated empirical and hypothetico-deductive methods in the social sciences.

Known for structural functionalism and for concepts such as “collective consciousness,” he worked on topics including morality, education, law, social stratification and religion, arguing that religious and moral phenomena can be explained by social factors. His legacy remains central to the social sciences and to contemporary theoretical vocabulary.
