About

Émile Littré was a French lexicographer, translator and philosopher whose work had a profound impact on the study of language and positivist thought in the 19th century. Trained in medicine, he mastered several ancient and modern languages — English, German, Greek, Latin and Sanskrit — which enabled him to produce scholarly translations and collaborate on scientific and medical editions. His foremost authority is the Dictionnaire de la langue française, the celebrated “Littré” (1863–1873), a lexicographical reference that systematically organized the meanings and usages of French with historical and philological rigor.

In addition to the dictionary, Littré translated foundational works — including the complete writings of Hippocrates and Pliny’s Natural History — and prepared annotated editions of political and scientific authors. As a thinker he drew close to positivism; he published studies on Comte and texts in philosophy and sociology that sought to apply the scientific method to political and social questions. A committed political actor, he took part in the 1830 insurrection and maintained a republican stance throughout his life.

His legacy combines a lasting lexicographical contribution, learned translational activity and intellectual engagement in French political and philosophical debate, establishing him as a central figure in the letters and humanities of his time.
