Eric Victor Burdon is a British singer and songwriter best known as a central voice of the 1960s rock scene. He rose to prominence as leader and vocalist of the group The Animals, a Newcastle band noted for intense blues and rock covers that helped define the British sound of the era. His raspy, theatrical delivery became a model for later generations of singers.
After The Animals broke up in 1966, Burdon continued the project as Eric Burdon and The New Animals and, at the end of the decade, joined the funk group War, with whom he recorded and toured until 1971, when he turned to a solo career. Over the following decades he led various lineups, released solo albums, and took part in occasional reunions of the original lineup.
Burdon’s legacy includes influence on styles such as Britpop and alternative rock; critics and musicians cite his voice as a decisive factor in emotionally charged and politically aware performances of the repertoire. His extensive discography, both with bands and as a solo artist, establishes him as a significant figure in the history of British rock.
