About

Erich Bessel‑Hagen was a German mathematician who also worked in the history of mathematics and in philology. Trained at the University of Berlin, he earned his doctorate in 1920 under the supervision of Constantin Carathéodory and developed an academic reputation among colleagues as a rigorous intellectual with courteous manners.

He contributed both to mathematical research and to historical scholarship about the discipline, and is remembered for his concern with preserving scholarship and access to knowledge in turbulent times. During the Nazi persecution he was notable for his solidarity with affected colleagues, in particular maintaining contact with and offering assistance to Felix Hausdorff when Hausdorff was forced into retirement and isolation.

Accounts of academic life in Göttingen include Bessel‑Hagen among stories of pranks and mutual respect, and he was even referenced humorously in contemporary works on topology. Bessel‑Hagen’s legacy lies in the combination of scientific output and attention to the institutional memory of mathematics, together with the ethical conduct he displayed in moments of crisis.
