About

Erich Heckel was a German painter, printmaker and sculptor, known as one of the founders of the expressionist group Die Brücke (1905–1913). He initially studied architecture in Dresden but left his studies to devote himself to art, taking on administrative duties within the collective that facilitated exhibitions and contacts with contemporary artistic circles such as the Blaue Reiter.

His work is notable for the intensive use of printmaking and woodcut as accessible means of production and dissemination. Influenced by Edvard Munch and by so-called primitive art—introduced to the group by his brother—Heckel explored figures of strong emotional expression and a visual vocabulary that sought to link the German neo-Romantic tradition with modern expressionism.

In addition to exhibitions with Die Brücke, Heckel took part in the art competitions at the 1928 and 1932 Olympic Games. Works from his 1920s output are regularly represented in collections and studies of German expressionism, and pieces such as his depictions of youthful figures have been singled out by critics for distilling the movement’s qualities.
