Erich Kettelhut was a German production designer, art director, and set decorator, recognized as one of the most important visual voices of German Expressionist cinema. He became known for the architectural and mechanical solutions that helped build vast cinematic worlds, notably in the assemblies for Die Nibelungen (1924) — where he designed structures such as the Icelandic castle and the dragon — and in Metropolis (1927), whose urban panorama and visual effects relied on his drawings and models.
Trained in applied arts and with prior experience in theatrical scenography, Kettelhut worked closely with Otto Hunte and Karl Vollbrecht; the trio shaped the aesthetic of several Fritz Lang films in the 1920s. His practice favored technical and economical solutions to realize complex constructions, integrating architecture, modeling, and camera effects.
Over the following decades he maintained an active career, moving from Expressionist projects to comedies and musicals through the 1960s. His archive of production drawings entered museum collections, helping secure his legacy in the history of production design and German cinematic aesthetics.
