About

Erich Kurt Mühsam was a Jewish-German essayist, poet and playwright whose literary and journalistic work shaped Germany’s political and cultural scene from the early twentieth century until the rise of Nazism. The author of plays, poems and essays, he took an active part in progressive and anarchist journals, editing publications and writing under pseudonyms; his works include plays such as Die Hochstapler and Staatsräson, along with poems and collections that circulated among militants and intellectuals.

After World War I, Mühsam became prominent within the council structures of the short-lived Bavarian Soviet Republic, and he emerged as a recognized figure on the German radical left. His work combined political critique and satire — including attacks on Hitler and the Nazi movement — with advocacy for a society free from the state apparatus.

With the Nazi rise to power he suffered persecution: he was arrested soon after the Reichstag fire in 1933 and moved between several concentration camps. In February 1934 he was taken to Oranienburg, where guards tortured and murdered him; his body was later found. Mühsam’s life is remembered both for his literary output and for his example of antifascist resistance.
