About

Erich Neumann was a psychologist and thinker born in Berlin, associated with Carl Gustav Jung’s analytical psychology. Trained in philosophy and medicine, he joined the Jungian circle and became one of the most influential voices of the developmental strand within depth psychology, regarded by some as Jung’s most brilliant disciple.

His work uses the amplification technique: correlating symptoms and psychic images with myths and symbols from various cultures to demonstrate the universality of psychic phenomena. Neumann conducted extensive studies of life cycles, matriarchal and patriarchal systems, and engaged with issues in ego psychology, introducing nuances absent from Jung’s work.

Among his best-known contributions is his description of the Great Mother complex as an ambivalent archetype—at once nurturing and devouring—and his analysis of symbolic constellations in the process of individuation, such as the “fratria.” His output includes major titles like The Origins and History of Consciousness, The Great Mother, and Amor and Psyche, works that influenced both supporters and critics in the field of depth psychology.
