About

Ernie Stautner was a German-born football player and coach, recognized as one of the great defenders of his generation. He played defensive tackle for the Pittsburgh Steelers from 1950 to 1963, where he became the cornerstone of a rugged, enduring defense; he was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1969. As a player he earned nine Pro Bowl selections, multiple All‑NFL honors and era-leading marks in safeties and fumble recoveries.

After retiring from the field, Stautner had a long and influential coaching career. He served on the staffs of the Steelers, Washington Redskins and, above all, the Dallas Cowboys, where he played a decisive role in developing the defensive lines and in shaping the famed Doomsday and Doomsday II defenses. Between 1966 and 1988 he helped develop talents such as Randy White, Ed Jones and Harvey Martin and worked as a defensive coordinator in notable seasons, including Super Bowl victories.

Beyond his technical legacy and institutional recognition — including the Steelers retiring his number and his inclusion on commemorative teams — Stautner is remembered for the physical toughness and professionalism that marked both his playing career and his decades of work training players and defensive units.
