About

Ernst Haeckel was a 19th-century German naturalist, biologist and professor whose work greatly influenced the spread of Darwinism in Germany. Trained in medicine, he moved into zoology and comparative anatomy, focusing on embryology, marine zoology and systematics; he described and named numerous species and constructed phylogenetic trees to relate forms of life.

He published influential works such as Die Radiolarien and Generelle Morphologie, and produced the celebrated illustration series Kunstformen der Natur, which left a lasting mark on scientific illustration. He introduced terms such as phylogeny, ecology and Protista and helped popularize the theory of natural selection through books and public lectures.

He proposed the so-called recapitulation law—the idea that ontogeny repeats phylogeny—which enjoyed wide acceptance in the 19th century but was later challenged; falsifications were also identified in some embryological drawings, which weakened his credibility. His work combined research, speculation and public outreach, leaving a complex legacy of scientific and artistic contributions alongside ethical controversies.
