About

Ernst Lubitsch was a German-American filmmaker whose work shaped sophisticated comedy in classical cinema. He began his career as an actor in silent films and, from the 1910s onward, established himself as a director, alternating historical dramas and comedies with notable international success. Films such as Madame DuBarry (1919) and Anna Boleyn (1920) confirmed his reputation in Europe before he moved to Hollywood in 1922.

In Hollywood, Lubitsch became synonymous with narrative elegance and wit, giving his name to the famed “Lubitsch Touch”: a subtle, clever, and slightly suggestive manner that influenced generations. In the transition to sound he excelled with musicals and romantic comedies — The Love Parade (1929), Monte Carlo (1930), The Smiling Lieutenant (1931) and Trouble in Paradise (1932) are among his key titles.

In the 1930s and ’40s he directed celebrated films such as Ninotchka (1939) and The Shop Around the Corner (1940), blending social irony with refined humor. Recognized by the industry, he received an honorary Academy Award in 1947 for 25 years of contribution to cinema. His legacy endures in the stylistic influence and the standard of comic sophistication he left as a lasting hallmark.
