About

Erwin Planck was a German politician and member of the resistance against the Nazi regime, known both for his work in the state apparatus of the Weimar Republic and for his role in groups that conspired against Hitler. The son of physicist Max Planck, he began his career in military service and moved into civilian roles in the Reich Chancellery, where he served as State Secretary under Franz von Papen and later under Kurt von Schleicher. After the Nazi rise to power he was removed from public administration and worked in the private sector as an executive of the Otto-Wolff group, maintaining contacts with conservative circles and retaining political influence.

Between 1939 and 1944 he took part in initiatives aimed at averting war and, later, in constitutional and political planning efforts alongside figures such as Johannes Popitz, Ulrich von Hassell and Ludwig Beck. Integrated into Carl Goerdeler’s circle, he was also connected to the July 20, 1944 plot. Arrested in July of that year, he was tried by the Volksgerichtshof and sentenced to death; he was executed in January 1945 at Plötzensee Prison.

His legacy is cited as an example of conservative resistance to Nazism; his memory is commemorated on plaques and in street names in Germany.
